# Find Duplicates

Find Duplicates looks for the same garment or texture added to a project more than once, shows you every copy, and removes the extras you agree to remove. It is free.

It is most useful after importing several packs or the same folder twice, when the item list has quietly filled up with copies.

## What counts as a duplicate

Duplicates are found by identical files, never by "looks alike". You choose which tests to run:

| Option | What it finds |
| --- | --- |
| **The same model file** | Two items pointing at one `.ydd`, which is what importing a folder twice produces. |
| **Identical contents** | The same bytes under a different name, for example `jacket.ydd` and `jacket_final.ydd`. |
| **Texture variations** | Duplicate texture variants. New in 2.0.8. |

Two textures that merely look similar are not found.

## Opening it

- Click the **Mass options** button beside the item list's search box and pick the **Duplicates** tab.
- Or, when the checks report that two items ship the same model, use the finding's **Find duplicates…** fix in the item's **Findings** tab or in [Problems](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/logs-and-problems).

The scope at the top decides which items are scanned: **All items**, **Filtered** (what the list currently shows) or **Selected** (when you opened it with items selected).

## Reviewing and removing

:::steps
### Scan
Tick the tests you want and click **Scan for duplicates**. The result says how many duplicates were found in how many groups. Items whose files are missing or unreadable are skipped and counted.

### Review each group
New in 2.0.8: every copy shows a picture, its drawable number and its size, with **keeps**, **removes** or **stays** beside it. By default the first one imported is kept.
- **Keep this** keeps a different copy instead.
- **Keep all** leaves the whole group alone. **Include again** puts it back into the removal.
- **Compare** opens the kept copy and this one in the 3D preview window, on the same ped, camera and lighting. Press `Tab` to flip between them.
- For texture variations, **Compare** shows the two textures side by side. Tick **Flicker A/B** to swap them in place, which makes small differences easy to spot.

### Remove
Click **Remove N item(s)** (or **Remove N texture variant(s)**). The result also says how much disk space would stop being referenced by the project.
:::

## Copies with different textures

New in 2.0.8: when a copy carries texture variants the kept item does not have, the copy is **kept by default**, so you never lose a colourway by accident. The group explains this and offers:

- **Merge textures into the kept item**: adds the copies' extra textures to the kept item, then removes the copies. One garment can have at most 26 texture variants, so a merge that would go over is refused.
- **Keep them**: leaves the copies in the project.
- **Remove anyway**: removes the copies and their colourways with them.

## Shared texture files

The same texture file behind different garments is often on purpose, such as a shared lining or a reused base colour. These are listed in their own section so you know about them, but nothing in it is removed. Change one in the item's **Textures** tab if it was not intended.

## Undo

Removing duplicates can be undone with **Undo removal** in the dialog, or with `Ctrl+Z` like any other action. The files themselves are never deleted from disk; only the project's references to them are removed.
